Who can become a Graduate Nursing Student Preceptor?
Precepting providers must be either an MD, DO, NP, PA, CNM/CM or CPM with at least one year of experience in their specialty area. We will also allow the PMHNP students to work up to 60 of their total hours with an LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) in the same clinical field as the requested experience. For example, our Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Students may be precepted by a Psychiatrist, PMHNP, or PA with Psych specialty.
What is the time commitment?
Our Family Nurse Practitioner students need 240 clinical hours in the first two clinical courses and 300 hours in the final clinical course. Of those hours, students will need 80-90 hours in PEDS and 40-50 hours in Women’s health during their program.
Our Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner students generally need 180 clinical hours in the first two clinical courses, 120 hours in the third clinical course and 300 hours in the final clinical course. This may be split between two different specialties, like 150 hours of Child and Adolescent and 150 hours of Adult.
Our Nurse-midwifery students need 180 clinical hours in the first clinical course, 240 hours in the second clinical course and 300 hours in the final clinical course. At least 50% of the hours must be with a CNM/CM. Students may need more hours to reach the required number of births.
What type of evaluation or paperwork will I need to complete?
We track all clinical experiences through the Exxat system. You will therefore receive an email, stating CLICK HERE, and a form will be available for you to fill out and submit it. Evaluation questions will ask you to rate the student and provide feedback on the student during the clinical experience. This process is easy to use and there is no need to upload and download paperwork.
Does anyone come to my practice?
Yes, if the site is within the DMV area, the Graduate Faculty assigned to this student will come to observe the student at the site during the semester and answer any questions you or the student may have.
Can another provider in my practice fill in if I am unavailable?
We prefer that the student is with the assigned preceptor throughout the clinical experience in order to be able to properly evaluate and give feedback at the end of the clinical experience. If the preceptor is out of the office and another qualified preceptor is in the office, it is acceptable for the student to spend a small portion of the total semester experience with another provider in the same office (contracted organization). The name and qualifications should be supplied to the Graduate Clinical Placement Coordinator.
